About Lone Voice Workshop

In the ancient Hebrew Scriptures, we find an interesting image that describes the person who speaks for God. He is described as “A lone voice crying in the wilderness.”

It was a voice that was ignored and dismissed. It was expelled from the towns and villages where people lived and pushed out to the edge of human existence. What we would describe in our modern vocabulary as “marginalized”.

History has taught us a valuable lesson when it comes to lone voices from the wilderness or “marginalized voices”: It is important that they are heard.

From my past career in the church, to my present work in community building and civic engagement I have learned one valuable lesson: The true strength of a community is NOT measured by how loudly it speaks in unison from the centre, but by how well it listens to the differing voices from the edge. The marginalized voices. The voices crying in the wilderness.

Lone Voice Workshop is a platform from which I hope those voices can be heard. This includes people who are marginalized in our society because of their social-economic standing, their lifestyles, and in some cases their disabilities. I also hope that here you will read from those who are marginalized in our faith communities because of their beliefs, their approach to faith, and sometimes, because they are simply “different”.

Regardless, my hope for Lone Voice Workshop is that it will become a place where we learn to listen. I am convinced that we build healthier communities and heal broken relationships not by speaking more, but by listening better.
